「人生の中で唯一信頼できるものは長年連れ添った妻と、飼い犬だけである。」
これはアメリカにおけるアノニマス、所謂詠み人知らずの格言ですが、私が好きなことばのひとつです。
長年連れ添う、一緒にいられるというのはお互いの信頼がなければ成り立たないことであり、年輪を重ねれば重ねるほど裏切りとは縁遠い、成熟した関係になります。
親と言えども別人格であり、子供もまた然り。彼らは長年連れ添う相手ではありませんし、信頼し合う相手でもありません。
財力を誇り、社会的地位を拠り所としていても家庭内において軽蔑されているような人はやはり徳が無いし人間としての魅力に著しく欠けています。
男性の力量を見定める上で一番分りやすいのは彼がどういった人と結婚していて、人生の伴侶からどういう評価、扱いを受けているかを知ることです。
たとえ社会的評価が高くなくても、その男性が長年連れ添ったパートナーから信頼されているならば、それに勝る賞賛は無いでしょう。
老夫婦が互いに信頼し合っている光景は実に美しいものです。
