政治的自由は民主主義社会の最も重要な特徴の一つではありますが、自分のやりたいように他人から搾取したり他人を傷つけたりすることは当たり前ですが自由とはいわず暴虐、専制政治とみなされます。
自由を標榜したいのであれば、それは他人の自由をも尊重すべき、即ち他人の財産を掠め取るようなことは許されませんし、他人の思考や行動を統制しようとするなどもってのほかです。
民主的で自由な精神が育まれている社会に於いては、人々の間で自発的に話し合いが行われ、取引がされ、そして互いに契約が結ばれていきます。誰かが強制的にルールを設定することなく、自発的にアイディアが商品化され、互いにサービスが提供されていき、社会的富の形成もフェアな形で進んでいきます。
laissez-faireとは、フランス語で「なすに任せよ」の意で、「政府が企業や個人の経済活動に干渉せず市場のはたらきに任せること」を指しますが、自由の意味をよく理解した民度の高い人々が集うところでは効果を発揮するのでしょう。
