通説的には「個人的な自由、経済的な自由の双方を重視する、自由主義上の政治思想・政治哲学の立場をリバタリアニズムと定義する」とされています。
因みに、個人の自由を抑制してでも経済的自由を優先させるのが右翼（新自由主義）、経済的自由を抑制してでも個人の自由を優先させるのが左翼（民主社会主義）、経済の自由も個人の自由もままならないのがポピュリスト（全体主義）とカテゴライズされています。
行き過ぎた拝金主義の成れの果てなのか、現行の世界に於いては貧富の格差や紛争の拡大に歯止めがかかる気配は今のところ見られませんが、変革を求めて目覚め始めている民は少なくないように思えます。 暴力やプライバシーの侵害とは無縁の状態で、各人のモラルや主義に則った形で経済的自由と個人の自由を満喫することができる社会を構築するべく、リバタリアニズムへの関心が高まっているように見受けられます。
It is commonly accepted that libertarianism is defined as a position of political thought and philosophy on liberalism that emphasis both personal and economic freedom.
It is classified as right-wing (neoliberalism) if priorities economic freedom with suppressing individual freedom, left-wing (democratic socialism) if priorities individual freedom with suppressing economic freedom, and populist (totalitarianism) if neither economic freedom nor individual freedom is possible.
The current world shows no sign of halting the widening gap between rich and poor and the spread of conflict, perhaps the result of excessive money (fiat currency)-worship, but many people seem to have begun to wake up to the need for change. There appears to be a growing interest in libertarianism to build a society where people can enjoy economic freedom and personal liberty in accordance with their own morals and principles, free from violence and invasion of privacy.
